Home > Intelligent video surveillance -- integrating behavior recognition software with video surveillance security systems

Video surveillance technology used to be rather
simplistic. That is simply not the case anymore. Instead of
just a video surveillance camera and a monitor, we now have
wireless technology, remote camera control abilities, motion
sensors and triggers, and video monitoring and viewing
through the Internet. The latest advancement in video
security systems is the integration of behavior recognition
capabilities. This paring of technology with video
surveillance security systems has gotten a lot of attention
lately in the press. This article is designed to take a
closer look at a company that has successfully paired these
two technologies to create a highly intelligent security
monitoring system.
The company that has made this mark in the industry is
Vidient
Systems, Inc. Their security system, called
Vidient SmartCatch, incorporates true behavior
recognition capabilities that are able to detect and alert
against threatening behavior. Vidient remarks that their
software solution has been able to consistently achieve 95%
to 98% accuracy in real world situations.
Some of the behavioral patterns the SmartCatch system is
programmed to detect are perimeter intrusions, unauthorized
access control, crowd detection, removed and unattended
objects. The SmartCatch security system is being used in
many airports and public transportation facilities around
the world as well as in some major corporations and other
public arenas.
Motion sensing and object tracking are the early forms of
behavior recognition technology. While these technologies
have done much to transform the video surveillance industry,
they do not even come close to comparing with the technology
behind the SmartCatch system. Vidient's system is actually
able to spot one of the most common yet difficult to detect
security breaches today called tailgating. Tailgating means
that more than one person gains access to a secure location
even though just one person has been cleared to enter.
Vidient's system is the first of its kind, and is
designed to provide complete protection. It has been
specifically designed to work alongside of existing
surveillance equipment. It also includes a complete package
of API's that are available for future integration as well
as interface customization. The integration of this
technology has truly transformed the surveillance industry.
Some of the additional features this security software
contains include:
- Easy integration with existing security infrastructure
- Automatically alert security personnel when suspicious
activity is detected
- Real-time monitoring of CCTV video surveillance
cameras for suspicious behaviors
- Creates a searchable video database for future study
and planning
- Comprehensive perimeter surveillance
- Built in support for mobile communication devices and
access control systems
Companies like Vidient that make such critical
technological contributions and advancements are necessary
as the security needs of our society change. We are likely
to see many other companies follow Vidient's example.
Vidient has gone a long way towards leading the charge.
