Home > Do the potential misuses of spy digital cameras outweigh the benefits they can bring?

As advancements are made in digital video technology,
covert digital devices have become smaller and smaller while
still becoming more and more powerful. Covert digital camera
devices can be made so small that they can easily be hidden
in objects such as pens, glasses, and cell phones. Some real
benefits can be gained from the use of hidden surveillance
technology. However, improper usage of covert camera devices
can have a real negative impact on personal privacy, and
encourage more intellectual property theft and industrial
espionage. We will seek to explore some of the negative
impacts the use of these miniature spy digital cameras can
have when placed in the wrong hands.
Covert surveillance cameras do have their benefits.
However, given the potential for serious misuse, it is easy
to see why some do not readily agree with their use. One of
the biggest problems with covert spy surveillance devices is
that they are so easy to come by in today's market. Anyone
can purchase these tiny hidden digital cameras easily off
the Internet. Because there is no way to control who
purchases hidden spy cameras, or what they do with them, the
potential for abuse is high. The two biggest opportunities
for abuse involve intellectual property theft, and invasion
of privacy rights. The following will explain each of these
problems a little more in depth.
- Intellectual property theft -- This is
perhaps one of the biggest dangers of inappropriately
used hidden camera devices. The potential cost to
corporations of stolen intellectual property data could
be astronomical. Intellectual property data can consist
of business contacts, confidential documents, computer
files, or marketing plans. Companies have sought to put
measures in place to keep this kind of theft from
occurring. However, the prevalence of these tiny digital
spy devices makes it almost impossible for companies to
protect themselves against all such theft.
- Invasion of personal privacy rights -- This
is always a concern since detecting the illegal use of
covert video cameras is almost impossible. Digital
cameras have become so small and so sophisticated, that
they can easily be concealed almost anywhere. They are
very effective at accomplishing what they were designed
to do, capture images undetected.
The introduction of these miniature hidden spy cameras
into the market has changed the way we have to think about
and deal with these issues. Since it is not likely that the
use of covert digital cameras will stop anytime soon,
companies need to adapt and develop effective strategies for
dealing with them. Companies need to take care to educate
their employees of their rights as well as potential
consequences if they are caught using covert digital cameras
illegally.
Since this trend is not likely to end anytime soon, our
best defense is to be educated about the potential misuses
of covert video devices. Businesses and individuals alike
need to be well aware of the potential losses they can face
both corporately and privately. It is only then that
effective strategies will emerge.
