It is inevitable at some point in your driving career
that you will be faced with the prospect of being caught
on photo radar exceeding the posted speed limit. You find yourself
wondering if your little mishap was just caught on film, and
if you will be receiving a ticket in the mail.
There are
actually products on the market that are made specifically
to make your license plate number unreadable by traffic
surveillance devices like speed cameras used to enforce the
speed limit. Speed camera number plate covers come in a
variety of different forms. We will review some of the more
popular devices and see how effective they really are.
A company on the market called
PhantomPlate
focuses solely on making products that help
you avoid photo radar tickets. They offer three basic
products that are used to distort the numbers on your
license plate so that they are unreadable by these traffic
surveillance cameras. These three products include the
PhotoBlocker™ Spray,
PhotoShield™ Cover,
and
Reflector™ Cover.
Let us take a more detailed look at
each of these products below.
-
PhotoBlocker™ Spray
-- This product comes in an easy to apply spray that
simply sprays on to your license plate. Once applied, it
produces a glossy film on your plate that is invisible to
the naked eye. The gloss however causes any traffic camera
flash to be reflected off the plate making your license
number unreadable. You can purchase one bottle of The
PhotoBlocker™ Spray for $29.99.
-
PhotoShield™ Cover
-- This product consists of a clear transparent cover that
fits over your license plate. The cover actually
incorporates a very thin lens that helps distort the image
taken by speed cameras, and also diffuse the beams
generated from infrared cameras, laser cameras, and laser
guns. The PhotoShield™ Covers are easy to install and sell
for $25.00.
-
Reflector™ Cover
-- This cover also fits easily over your license plate. The
durable plastic cover is made with light reflecting
crystals. If a photo radar or red light camera snaps a
picture of your plate, the cover reflects the light from
the flash back to the camera causing the image to be
overexposed. This product is also very inexpensive,
selling at $19.99.
All these products have proven to be effective in keeping
your license plate number from being read by traffic
surveillance cameras. You may be wondering though if these
products are even legal. According to PhantomPlate their
products are all 100% legal. It is interesting to note
however, that next to both their PhotoShield™ Cover and
Reflector™ Cover products it states they are 100% legal to
own. They may not in fact be 100% legal to use. Some cities
like Baltimore do outlaw license plate slipcovers. If you
are concerned about legality, you may want to stick to the
spray. It is not currently outlawed anywhere, is very
effective, and is virtually impossible to detect.
