Mobile school bus video surveillance systems -- improving the safety of our children

Ensuring the safety of our children while they are in school has always been a concern of parents. Although, it can be easy to assume that once a security plan has been developed and implemented, we can rest easy. Safety does not work this way. A good security plan has to be constantly analyzed and revisited. In light of recent events, school safety has taken a position of prominence once again. Recently many school districts have been exploring the use of mobile school bus video surveillance systems as a way to enhance their overall security plan. After all, the safety of our children en route to school is just as important as it is once they arrive.

There are really two main reasons to consider installing school bus video security systems. They are improving the field of vision for the driver, and surveillance monitoring. Once you discover some of the other hidden benefits mobile surveillance can provide it will be easy to see how implementing such a system would go along way towards improving overall safety. We will explore these benefits a little more in depth throughout the remainder of this article.

Bus driver vision enhancement

One of the biggest concerns of bus drivers and parents alike it the safety of their child in and around the bus itself. Since buses are such large vehicles, it is often very difficult for drivers to see young children as they walk around and behind the bus. Sadly, children have been struck by their school bus because the driver was unable to see them.

A company called Safety Vision markets a mobile video monitoring system that consists of rear-view, side-view, and onboard cameras. The cameras are specifically designed to improve the driver's field of vision both inside and outside the bus. The system comes with a monitor that can be mounted near the driver's seat for easy viewing.

Surveillance monitoring for behavior management

Another reason to conduct surveillance on a school bus is to monitor the behavior and activity of people both inside and outside the bus. Cameras can be used to monitor activities such as boarding and exiting, and act as a deterrent against violence and vandalism. In addition, video monitoring can provide a means to assess a driver's ability and safety risk, as well detect the violations of other driver's around the bus itself.

Safety Vision markets several recorders, which when used in conjunction with their camera line make a complete surveillance package. Their RouteRecorder™ 5C, for example, is a mobile digital video recorder that can record views from up to five cameras. The unit itself is very durable and comes with the necessary software to integrate with Safety Vision's mobile cameras.

Another company called Honeywell sells a similar line of cameras and recorders. Honeywell's HTCD52 digital surveillance cameras capture and store high quality digital images and audio from both inside and outside the bus. The cameras are easy to install and are designed to work in conjunction with Honeywell's digital data recorders.

Monitoring school bus activity is just one part of a comprehensive school safety plan. Each part deserves careful attention as we work towards the overall goal of achieving safer schools.
