If you live in or around the Boston area, you know how
busy the roads can be during rush hour. Having a resource
you can turn to that allows you to gain up to the minute
details of road and traffic conditions can be a real time
savor when it comes to planning your route to work. There
are numerous live traffic cameras in Boston, both in and
around the city that you can access via the web to get
insight into the traffic conditions on area roads. Before
you set out on your next morning commute, try one of the
following resources.
•
SmarTraveler -- This site provides access to traffic
surveillance cameras both in and around the Boston area.
Some of the prominent highway locations you can access are
Route93/Tobin Bridge/Central Artery, Route 1 (Eastern
Bank/Saugus), and the Southeast Expressway (Fortress
Building). This site also has links to traffic cameras
positioned in over thirteen prominent locations in the
Boston area. Traffic cameras on this site provide still
images that refresh every 60 seconds.
•
wbztv.com -- This Boston news channel provides detailed
traffic reports along with access to local traffic cameras.
Featured locations include the Expressway N/S near Logan
Airport, Storrow and Memorial Drive, and the upper/lower
decks of I-93 in Somerville. Images on this site do not
refresh as frequently as some of the other sites, but you
can still get a general picture of overall road conditions
before you set out.
•
Massachusetts Turnpike Authority -- This website
provides streaming traffic camera views of 15 different
locations on I-90 and I-93. The video footage scrolls
through each location and provides about 8 seconds of
footage for each. A detailed map of the greater Boston area
is also available on the site that pinpoints the exact
location of each traffic camera.
•
TheBostonChannel.com -- This site has partnered with
SmarTravel to provide another resource for access to live
views of Boston area traffic. They provide an easy to select
list of traffic cameras along with a map of specific camera
locations that you can click on to get more information.
Traffic cameras are available for the downtown Boston area
as well as areas north, south, and west of Boston. In
addition, there is also a traffic camera accessible for the
Bourne Bridge and area approaches, in the Cape Cod vicinity.
If you live in or around the Boston area, make sure you
check out one of these helpful websites before you venture
out. Knowing the traffic conditions ahead of time will give
you the ability to plan alternative routes if appropriate,
saving you considerable time. It never hurts to be well
informed of all of your options..
