Internet video cameras come in all shapes and sizes. The only real way to determine which model is right for you is to take a closer look at the cameras features and read up on how the camera ranks among third-party reviewers. This article does just that for the Linksys Wireless-G Internet video camera (model WVC54GC). Learning more about the features this camera offers and hearing how this camera is ranked may help you decide if this camera is a viable option for you.

First, we will look at the most notable features of the Linksys WVC54GC that make it stand out among other Internet video security cameras.

  • Built-in web server -- For starters, this camera is built as its own stand-alone web server. This means that you can connect the camera directly to an existing network either wirelessly, or via an Ethernet cable. Once the camera is connected to your home network, you can view captured video from any PC in your home. You can also configure a port on your router to allow you to gain access to the camera directly through the Internet from anywhere in the world.

  • Configurable security mode -- Another great feature of this camera is its security mode setting that can be configured to automatically send an email message with a short video clip attached if motion is detected.

  • Easy recording -- A recording utility tool allows you to easily record both audio and video data captured from your camera directly to your local hard drive. You can set up this feature to record live feeds, or to just record at predetermined intervals.

  • Quality images -- This camera supports resolution of up to 320x240 pixels and supports enhanced MPEG-4 compression.

Now we will look at how this camera ranks among some third party reviewers.

ZDNet, which performs reviews on emerging software, and technology, posted a review of the Linksys Wireless-G camera. Out of 10 points, they rated this camera a 7.5. Some of the pros listed were easy wireless or wired connectivity and accessibility from anywhere via the Internet. A few of the cons mentioned were its large and bulky camera size, lack of a remote pan/tilt/zoom option, and no outdoor housing option. They also remarked that the camera setup was straightforward and image quality was satisfactory.

Another website called I Review Electronics conducted a similar review on this camera. They gave this camera a mediocre review. They rated the features high, but stated that they could not recommend the camera because several users stated that the camera had dark resolution in low-light conditions. It was also reported that some users had trouble connecting the camera to their WEP-enabled wireless network. Click on the following link to read their entire Linksys Model WVC54GC review.

Overall, it appears that this camera has a lot of potential, but the picture quality, camera size, and lack of remote camera control are potential drawbacks to this model. Because this camera is priced low for the features it contains, you may be able to overlook these drawbacks. Nevertheless, it still remains a notable Internet video camera for the price.
