Covert video surveillance -- learn more about the advantages and disadvantages of using hidden video cameras

Hidden video cameras are concealed cameras that are used to observe a subject or area without anyone being aware of their presence. Hidden surveillance cameras come in all shapes and sizes, and with a wide array of available features. Since they are meant to remain hidden from the observer, they are often made to look like objects that have other uses. For example, hidden cameras are often made to look like clocks, computer speakers, and smoke detectors. They are often small enough to be concealed in objects such as pens, cell phones, or even a button.

There are many different uses for covert security cameras. Traditionally they were used mainly for commercial or industrial applications to monitor employees, building perimeters, warehouse storage area, etc. They have however become increasingly popular for home surveillance. Homeowners are using them to keep watchful eye over their child's caregiver, to monitor sleeping children, and even to keep an eye on their teen while they are home alone. Homeowners are also installing hidden cameras outside their homes to keep an eye on the exterior of their property, their vehicles, etc.

The benefit of using a hidden security camera over a model that is placed out in the open is that the monitored subject will not have any reason to hide their intentions. In some instances, the only way you will be able to obtain evidence of suspicious activity is to use a hidden security camera. A hidden camera is often able to provide evidence that would otherwise be impossible to gather.

There is of course some controversy surrounding the use of covert security cameras. Many people view them as an invasion of personal privacy. This is a valid concern due to the hidden nature of the cameras themselves, and because it is virtually impossible to determine when they are being used inappropriately. Nevertheless, this does not negate the fact that there are some positive legitimate uses for these devices. Individuals have been able to uncover child abuse from caregivers, as well as catch those responsible for personal theft and vandalism. Business owners have been able to uncover among other things theft, trespassing, and improper conduct by using these covert devices.

Hidden security cameras are also used on a much larger scale by law enforcement and national security agencies. They use covert video surveillance and hidden camera devices to monitor suspicious persons, thwart large-scale terrorist activity, and improve overall security in general. Hidden camera devices provide them with a valuable tool to gather evidence that would otherwise go undiscovered. Such an important application of this technology can be potentially life saving to scores of people.

The installation and usage of hidden security cameras is not a topic that fosters public consensus. It is likely that there will always be those that disagree with the use of covert video devices. However, it is not likely that we will see their use diminish any time soon.
