Home > Do dummy security cameras effectively deter crime? A look at the pros and cons of their use

Posted signs indicating the use of closed circuit
television or video surveillance equipment are posted
everywhere. Most public buildings have some form of
surveillance equipment set up on the premises. Just because
a camera is present though, does not mean video surveillance
is in use. Having a posted sign definitely does not
guarantee that a functioning system is in place. Many
businesses employ the use of dummy security cameras as a way
to try to deter criminal activity in or around their
facility.
Is this really an effective way to prevent crime though?
Let us explore the use of dummy video surveillance a little
more in-depth in an effort to determine if this method is
effective at preventing crime. First, we will look at some
of the potential advantages that can be achieved by
utilizing a dummy video surveillance camera, and then we
will list some of the potential disadvantages.
Potential advantages of implementing a dummy video
camera
- Provides the elusion of active monitoring -- If
a camera is present, it is virtually impossible at first
glance to know whether the camera is actively recording
live footage or not. Dummy security systems are made to
look exactly like the real thing. The standard response to
seeing a video camera is to assume that it is an active
surveillance camera.
- Likelihood of criminal activity decreases --
People tend to be more careful of their actions when they
know they are being video monitored and recorded. The mere
presence of a video camera may be enough to deter some
potential crimes from ever occurring.
Potential disadvantages of implementing a dummy video
camera
- Fake cameras can be uncovered -- It is feasible
that a criminal could determine that a fake video camera
was being used. While at first glance it would be
difficult to tell, a little investigation and careful
observation could reveal the ineffectiveness of the
system.
- Once a fake is discovered criminal activity may
actually increase -- Once a fake surveillance system
is uncovered, you are at a real disadvantage. You could
see a real spike in criminal activity as this weakness in
your security system is exploited.
- Provides a false sense of security --
Installing dummy cameras provide a false sense of
security. One of the biggest components of an effective
security system is active monitoring. If an individual
sees a security camera present, they may assume that they
have a measure of protection that in fact does not exist.
This may cause people to let their guard down.
Overall, it would appear that dummy cameras might provide
some form of a deterrent against criminal activity in the
short term. However, if you are looking for a long-term
effective security plan, dummy video cameras are probably
not the way to go.
