Smaller home security cameras raise privacy issues with neighbors

Everyone wants to feel secure, and in this day and age, sometime we have to take more drastic measures to achieve that feeling. Home video surveillance equipment can help assuage concerns -- when used for that purpose. However, such equipment raises privacy issues, as small home security cameras can be used for spying and watching neighbors. The same product that can make you feel safer can also be used to invade your privacy.

A recent altercation documented in the Portsmouth Herald explains the perils of home security cameras when it comes to privacy matters. Privacy invasions have led to a series of arguments that have become legal issues. New Hampshire representative Bob L'Heureux wants to include the home interior to a policy protecting areas of privacy like bathrooms from surveillance to avoid such problems.

Many companies are producing smaller, cheaper surveillance cameras than can easily be hidden. The wide availability of these cameras raises privacy concerns and controversy. There's the issue of one person wanting a camera for security matters while another may use it to spy on a neighbor with a salacious intent. This leads to the need for new privacy policies.

Video surveillance has -- for better or for worse -- become an issue in our daily lives. This video monitoring happens at work and in stores. But to many, the home is a sacred place, with a privacy that must not be violated. In the near future, it's likely we'll see a change in privacy laws to reflect and protect this issue.
