You might have never thought of using an Internet camera
for a security application, but the concept is actually a
perfect fit. Wireless web cameras come complete with their
own web server so that you can connect directly to a network
either over Ethernet cable or wirelessly using an 802.11b
wireless network. This means you will be able to remotely
view and manage your wireless web cameras easily through an
Internet browser without the need of connecting it directly
to a computer.
There are several great models of wireless web cameras
available on the market today. For example, D-Link
manufactures a model called
DCS-900W SecuriCam . This camera
is very compact and can be set up to record manually, via
motion trigger, or based on scheduled recordings. Not only
is this model very inexpensive, it is also perfect for a
home surveillance system.
Another company that offers similarly competitive
wireless web cameras is Linksys. They offer a wireless video
camera that allows you to send live video over the Internet.
This camera comes with MPEG-4 video compression which
provides clear, high quality video footage, and can also be
set up to automatically send an email alert based on a
motion trigger. Video images from the
Linksys Wireless-B video camera can also be viewed securely outside of the
local network simply by opening an appropriate router port
and creating a password protected account. This camera is
also great for home applications and can support up to four
simultaneous users.
D-Link’s DCS-5300W SecuriCam is a little more expensive,
but also comes with many more advanced features. This camera
system comes with a built in microphone to capture audio
sound along with a CCD Sensor that provides superior color
images. This system also comes with pan, tilt, and zoom
capabilities that are controllable via either remote control
or through a web interface. IP surveillance software comes
included with this package allowing you to easily monitor up
to 16 wireless web cameras at once on a single screen. You
can also set up a motion sensor to automatically send an
email alert when triggered.
With so many great wireless web cameras available you are
bound to find one that meets both your needs and your
budget.
