Home > Camera phones and security issues -- why all the fuss?
September 8, 2005
By: Lynn Bryant
For most of you reading this article, you either own a
camera phone yourself or you know someone that does. If this
is not the case, than you have certainly have at least seen
one of the many advertisements for camera phones. By now you
have also probably heard some of the buzz going around about
how camera phones pose real security issues. What exactly is
all the fuss about, and what are the real security issues at
stake?
As shown in their advertisements, the phone companies
want you to think that camera phones are simply for taking
harmless photos of your surroundings and sending them off to
surprise your friends. Change that image to be a photo of a
highly classified document or snapshot of computer code and
you’ve got a serious security threat. With the increase in
popularity of camera phones the government and many
corporations are taking these potential security issues very
seriously.
Over 50 million camera phones were shipped worldwide last
year alone. Companies are being forced to develop elaborate
policies to help protect themselves against such things as
theft of software code, business processes, product designs
along with other security issues such as theft of plant
layout schematics and surveillance details. Not only are
companies concerned about this possible theft of
intellectual property, but they now have to be concerned
with protecting themselves against potential lawsuits from
individuals claiming privacy violations.
While there are legitimate potentially even life saving
uses for camera phones, the extent to which they are allowed
to be used needs to be seriously considered. Corporations
especially need to be cautious, and establish strict usage
policies to protect themselves. In this day in age, security
issues cannot be taken lightly.
