Issues to consider when you record live streaming video

Once a surveillance camera is implemented you may want to record live streaming video from it. This is a fairly simple process. Typically, all you need is some additional software and hard drive space on a personal computer. A stand alone digital video recorder (DVR) could also do the job, but they are considerably more expensive.

However, even with all the right equipment, there are some difficulties you may encounter if you try to record live streaming video from a web camera over the Internet.

1. Choose quality equipment when you record live streaming video

The streaming video will only be as good as the camera that is capturing the images. Similarly, poor microphone reception will lead to poor quality audio. In addition, there are many different software packages to help you record live streaming video. To avoid the low resolution of the web camera solution, you can always opt to use a video capture card. Do your research and pick the ones that are suitable for your application.

2. Avoid Internet traffic when you record live streaming video

Streaming video is very sensitive to interruptions in the data flow. For this reason, if the website you are working with has too much Internet traffic, it can cause a slight delay in the streaming video. Choose to record the live streaming video when Internet traffic is not so much of an issue.

3. Use a fast computer to record live streaming video

The speed at which your personal computer system is running at the time you are recording can affect the quality of the live streaming video. Try to use a computer with at least 400 MHz and close out all other applications except for those you are using to record the live streaming video.

4. Use DSL or cable modem to record live streaming video

Let’s face it, dial-ups are old-fashioned. They are not suitable for some of the more intense graphic or audio multimedia elements available on the Internet now. If you want to have a high quality product, use DSL or cable modem.
